Learning a foreign language will make you brain bigger!
According to a Swedish study that used Brain Scans (MRI’s) to compare one group who learned foreign languages to another who studied medicine
The scientists found that the brain size in the groups of language learners grew in size, partially the Hippocampus (area of the brain associated with memory), whereas the no language learner’s brain size remained unchanged. This study only lasted for three months and they do not know the long term effects. However, the results are encouraging and show how learning a new language can keep the brain in shape.
Other studies are researching how one learns a foreign language. A professor from the University of Illinois in Chicago conducted a study on foreign language learning by using an artificial language as the subject. Group A where taught the rules and grammar and group B were taught through engagement. Group B results showed that the brain process picked up the language like a native speaker.
Another study on brain research found that people who speak more than one language have better memories and have a less likely chance of getting Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Simply put, learning a foreign language this year is a no brainer.
